Biography

Jan Balliauw joined the Egmont Institute in January 2025 as a Senior Associate Fellow in the Europe in the World programme. He has been working as a senior reporter from 1993 till 2024 for VRTNWS (News Department of Flemish public broadcaster). As such he has been covering extensively the war in Ukraine and visited the country five times since the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Prior to this, he witnessed firsthand the Maidan-revolution in 2014 and was present in Crimea during the annexation by Russia. He also reported after Maidan on the conflict in Eastern Ukraine from both sides.

Jan Balliauw has been a Moscow correspondent from 1990 till 1993 and regularly went back to Russia for news reports and documentaries. He speaks Russian fluently.

Besides Russia and Ukraine, he has experience as a journalist covering events in all the former communist countries in Central and Eastern Europe, especially Hungary and Poland.

Jan Balliauw was also the Foreign Affairs and Defence Correspondent for VRTNWS. He was present during many international summits during the past 30 years.
