The 2024 Global Strategy PhD Prize Awarded
ESDC and Egmont Award the 2024 Global Strategy PhD Prize to Dr Brice Didier for his work on EU Foreign Policy
The European Security and Defence College (ESDC) and the Egmont Institute award the 2024 edition of the annual Global Strategy PhD Prize to Dr Brice Didier, from the Global Studies Institute at the University of Geneva.
Dr Didier obtained his PhD from the University of Geneva in September 2024. His dissertation, European Union Foreign & Security Policy and Big Member States’ Ad Hoc Initiatives: Solving the Effectiveness-Legitimacy Equation, analyses the interplay between EU foreign policy and informal groupings, notable the “big three” of France, Germany, and the UK, in times of crisis. At a moment when there is, sadly, no lack of crisis, while EU decision-making is often hindered by the position of outlying Member States, while a new British government is seeking to revamp cooperation with the Union, this is a most timely analysis, with obvious policy-relevant implications.
Warmest congratulations to Dr Didier on behalf of the jury: Fergal O’Regan (Acting Head of the ESDC, co-chair), Prof. Dr. Sven Biscop (Egmont & Ghent University, co-chair), Dr Jan Joel Andersson (EUISS), Prof. Dr Foteini Asderaki (University of Piraeus), Inge Ceuppens (European Commission) Prof. Dr Daniel Fiott (Vrije Universiteit Brussel), Dr Eva Gross (EEAS), and Prof. Dr Luis Simón (Vrije Universiteit Brussel & Real Instituto Elcano).
