Biography

Dr. Valérie Arnould is Legal & Policy Advisor on Transitional Justice at Avocats sans Frontières. She is also an Affiliated Senior Researcher with the Leuven Institute of Criminology at the University of Leuven, where she is also the editor-in-chief of the Leuven Transitional Justice Blog.

From 2014 to 2021, she worked as Senior Research Fellow with the Africa Programme at the Egmont Institute.

Previously, she was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the School of Law, University of East London, where she worked on a collaborative research project investigating the impact of transitional justice on democratic institution-building, as well as a Guest Lecturer on transitional justice at the Brussels School of International Studies – Kent University and a Visiting Lecturer on the human rights programme at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa.

From 2007 to 2012, she worked as a risk analyst on francophone Africa at a London-based strategic intelligence company.

She holds a PhD in War Studies from King’s College London, an MA in Conflict, Security and Development from King’s College London, and BA and LLM degrees in international relations and international law from the Université Libre de Bruxelles.

Her areas of expertise are political and security dynamics in Central Africa, transitional justice, and human rights in peacebuilding.

 

ACTIVITIES

– 15 December 2021 : Valérie Arnould interviewed Wouter De Vriendt, president of the Special Parliamentary Commission on Belgium’s colonial past (watch here)

-26 March 2021: Valérie Arnould participated in a Round Table on “La lutte contre l’impunité en République Démocratique du Congo” organised by Marie Arena, Députée européenne belge S&D and MEP.  Watch the video.

-27-27 January 2021: Valérie Arnould participated in the Table ronde d’experts sur la justice transitionnelle en RDC organised by CAD-Congo, Trial International, l’Institut Francophone pour la Justice et la Démocratie (IFJD), la Conférence Épiscopale Nationale du Congo (CENCO) et l’Église du Christ au Congo (CJPS/ECC).

-27 June 2020:  Valérie Arnould presented a paper on ‘Justice Norms and Politics at the UN Security Council’ at the annual meeting of the United Nations Academic on the United Nations Council System.

-10 June 2020: Valérie Arnould participated in a consultation on the Security Council and Transitional Justice organised by the Security Council Report.
