For decades, the West has been repeatedly caught off guard by Russian military actions. In Land van het Grote Sterven: Hoe Rusland de Westerse logica tart, Dr. Joris Van Bladel, Senior Associate Fellow at the Egmont Institute, explores why—unpacking the historical continuity of Russian military culture, its deeply ingrained logic of sacrifice, and the paradox of a state where victory is the guiding principle, yet wars seem endless. Rather than prioritizing efficiency, the Russian state emphasizes effectiveness—often leading to prolonged conflicts where endurance becomes a necessity rather than a choice.
Based on thirty years of research, this book offers a longue durée perspective on Russia’s approach to war, strategy, and power. It challenges conventional Western assumptions and provides essential insights for policymakers, analysts, and scholars striving to grasp Russia’s military mindset.
The book is published in Dutch, with English and French translations forthcoming. The presentation and discussion will take place in English.
Please note that this is an in-person event.
