The Egmont Institute has the pleasure to invite you to an online discussion on the gender dimension of the EU enlargement policy. In the framework of the project?(Re)uniting the East and West: Reflections on the 2004 EU enlargement (REWEU) which commemorates with other six EU think tanks the two decades of the 2004 Big Bang Enlargement. The paper ‘Europe Unfinished Integration’ provides an overview of the impact the EU accession had on candidate countries’ regulatory environment touching upon equality legislation as well as women’s participation to politics and to the negotiations and also providing a snapshot of differences in accession countries’ public opinions according to gender division. Ultimately, it also reflects on the impact these elements played and concurred to today’s situation two decades after having obtained membership.

The webinar will present the results of these studies and then look at the current EU negotiations with candidate countries and the frameworks put in place for monitoring progress in this dimension. The discussion will be introduced by the presentation of the paper by its main authors; followed by a contribution by the European Commission on the current enlargement pointing at achievements and persisting challenges.
