Professional militaries under democratic control have underpinned stability in the Euro-Atlantic region, but are they vulnerable to democratic backsliding?  Following moves in the U.S. to politicize officer appointments and military education, observers have debated whether democratic armed forces can protect against democratic backsliding, when they might enable shifts toward authoritarianism, and how these changes affect military readiness.  Drawing on new global data and analysis on defense institutions, Dr Berg will discuss the challenges and risks facing armed forces in backsliding democracies and the implications for democracy and security in the Euro-Atlantic region.
