From 8 to 10 June 2026, the Education & Training Programme of the Egmont Institute, in partnership with the European Union Training Initiative (EUTI), delivered a training session on the “Human Rights Due Diligence Policy (HRDDP)” in Brussels.
The HRDDP provides a structured framework for managing risks related to transparency, accountability, the rule of law, participation, and responsiveness. To support its effective implementation in operational environments, the training brought together participants from 11 Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) civilian missions, 5 CSDP military missions, and EEAS Headquarters. Expert presentations from The Representation Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Geneva Centre for Security Sector Governance (DCAF), the Royal Military Academy, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict (OSRSG CAAC) were complemented by practical exercises, equipping participants with both conceptual knowledge and operational tools for applying the HRDDP in international crisis management and peace support contexts.
Following 3 intensive days of learning and exchange, participants strengthened their ability to identify, categorise, and assess risks linked to mission mandates, operational activities, and partnerships. They are now better equipped to develop and monitor mitigation measures aimed at reducing potential violations of International Human Rights Law (IHRL) and International Humanitarian Law (IHL), thereby supporting more effective and accountable mission implementation.
