From 17 to 21 May 2026, a field mission took place in Bujumbura to explore new perspectives for collaboration between Burundi and Belgium in the field of diplomatic training.
In this context, H.E. Mr Michael Wimmer, Ambassador of Belgium to Burundi, met with H.E. Mr Sophonie Nitunga, Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and Development Cooperation of Burundi, on 19 May 2026. The meeting, attended by a representative of the Education & Training Programme, focused on the potential joint development of a curriculum aimed at preparing Burundian diplomats for deployment abroad.
This prospective initiative would be implemented in close cooperation with the Embassy of Belgium in Burundi and the Burundian authorities, with the support of the Directorate-General for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid of the Federal Public Service Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation of Belgium.
Further steps will help define the scope and modalities of this prospective collaboration.
