The Gulf region plays a key role in the geopolitics of Western Asia and the Middle East, reaching with its impact the Mediterranean basin and the EU beyond just energy.

The EU has a strong interest in developing its engagement with the Gulf, as well as its understanding of the complexity of the web of relationships that the Gulf maintains and develops globally. This is particularly critical for the EU as the Gulf deepens it’s relationship with China, East and Central Asia and Turkey, and as some Gulf states embrace BRICS.
