The 2023 Global Strategy PhD Prize Awarded
ESDC and Egmont Award the 2023 Global Strategy PhD Prize to Dr Tobias Gehrke for his work on Geoeconomics
The European Security and Defence College (ESDC) and the Egmont Institute award the 2023 edition of the annual Global Strategy PhD Prize to Dr Tobias Gehrke, a Senior Policy Fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) in Berlin.
Dr Gehrke obtained his PhD from Ghent University on 7 November 2022. His dissertation, Geoeconomics: How great power competition is transforming the global economy, offers a broad-ranging analysis of a most timely issue. It combines conceptual clarity in the relatively new field of geoeconomics with a historically grounded analysis and a prospective view that is most relevant for EU policy. At a time when the great powers are mostly positioning themselves vis-à-vis each other through various geoeconomic strategies, Dr Gehrke’s dissertation is a must-read. It is also a good read – academic writing can be enjoyable to read too!
Warmest congratulations to Dr Gehrke on behalf of the jury: Holger Osterrieder (Head of the ESDC, co-chair), Prof. Dr. Sven Biscop (Egmont & Ghent University, co-chair), Dr Jan Joel Andersson (EUISS), Tanja Zegers (European Commission) Prof. Dr Daniel Fiott (Vrije Universiteit Brussel), Dr Eva Gross (EEAS), and Prof. Dr Luis Simón (Vrije Universiteit Brussel & Real Instituto Elcano).
