Transitional Justice and Democratisation Processes in sub-Saharan Africa

By Valérie Arnould (2013-05-26)

In Other publications

The relationship between transitional justice and democracy is complex and contested. Enquiring into the nature of this relationship requires a greater focus on issues of institutional design of transitional justice mechanisms and comparisons across countries and political contexts. In particular, there is a need to explore whether sub-Saharan African contexts, marked predominantly by transitions from armed conflict, present particular challenges for transitional justice’s ability to contribute to democracy.

Paper presented at Centre of African Studies Conference, University of Edinburg, 24 May 2013.
